You put the paper and pencils on the table and hear: «I don't want to,» or worse, «I can't draw.» Before concluding this child «isn't the creative type,» it's worth investigating, because the refusal almost always has a concrete, fixable cause.
The most common causes
- Comparison. A sibling who draws beautifully, a classmate who gets praised. The child concludes the contest isn't worth entering and withdraws.
- Too much correcting. If someone has said «the sky isn't green» or «let me finish it,» the message that landed was: there's a right way, and it isn't mine.
- Motor difficulty. The hand tires, the pencil slips, the line doesn't go where they want. That's not disinterest, it's discomfort, and thicker supplies fix much of it.
- Too hard a page. A drawing packed with tiny details frustrates any small child.
- A different interest, plainly. Some children prefer building, assembling, running. That's valid too.
How to reopen the door
Don't announce it. Leave the paper and pencils on the table and start coloring yourself, without inviting anyone. Curiosity usually works better than an invitation. If they come over, don't praise immediately or ask too many questions, just keep going.
Offer the character they love, not a generic drawing. Coloring Pigúiça after meeting her in her story is a completely different thing from coloring a random figure, because now it means something.
Lower the bar: start with a very simple, large page, the kind that can be finished in five minutes. Finishing is what creates the appetite to do it again.
What to avoid
Don't make it a duty («you're staying there until it's done»), don't draw over their work, don't fix it. And above all: don't say «that's lovely» on autopilot. Children detect automatic praise, and it hollows out the value of what they made.
A side door
If pencils don't click, try another route into art: potato stamps, magazine collage, chalk drawings on the ground. Children often come back to paper later, through a different door.
