If you have a husky, or are thinking about getting one, be ready: this is a breed that sheds year-round, with two intense peaks called «blowouts», usually in spring and fall. During these periods, the dog can lose an impressive amount of undercoat in just a few weeks. That is completely normal and part of the breed's genetics, not a sign of illness.

Why huskies shed so much

Huskies have a double coat: a longer, coarser outer layer, and a dense, soft undercoat that works as insulation, protecting them from extreme cold and also from heat. During a blowout, the body replaces that undercoat entirely, which explains the sheer volume of loose fur.

Brushing routine

  • On normal days, brush 2 to 3 times a week with a slicker brush or a two-level comb.
  • During heavy shedding season, brush daily, ideally outdoors, to keep the fur from taking over the house.
  • Use an undercoat rake, designed to pull out loose undercoat without hurting the skin.
  • Always brush in the direction of hair growth, with gentle strokes.

Bathing: not too much, not too little

Bathing too often strips the natural oils that protect the skin. Aim to bathe your husky every 4 to 8 weeks, or when visibly dirty, always using dog-specific shampoo. A good bath right before a heavy shed, followed by brushing, helps loosen dead fur faster.

Why you should never shave a husky

Shaving a husky's coat is a common and harmful mistake. The double coat protects the dog from both cold and heat, regulating body temperature. Shaving destroys that natural protection, can cause sunburn and overheating, and in some cases the coat never grows back the same way. Regular brushing is always the right solution, never scissors or clippers.

Good nutrition helps too

A diet rich in omega-3s and quality protein supports a healthier coat and less irritated skin, which can reduce excess shedding outside of normal blowout periods. If your child loves huskies, the Pigúiça book is a fun way to introduce pet-care routines through a story, the little husky from the Magical Garden loves a good brushing day too.
