Naming a male dog seems easy until the whole family sits down and nobody agrees. The list below has 120 names sorted by style, so you can find the mood that fits your dog instead of scrolling an endless alphabetical list.

Three things that genuinely matter day to day:

  • Two syllables is the sweet spot. One syllable gets lost inside a sentence, four always turns into a nickname. If you pick a long name, decide the nickname now, because that is what the dog will actually learn.
  • Avoid anything that sounds like a command. Names close to no, sit, stay and come muddle training. A dog called Kit hears something uncomfortably close to sit.
  • Names ending in a vowel carry further. Your voice rises at the end, which cuts through street noise.

Short and easy to call

These work at any size and are the fastest for a dog to learn: Thor, Bud, Max, Rex, Zeus, Simba, Toby, Ace, Gus, Finn, Lucky, Cash, Tom, Rocky, Bruce, Kobe, Milo, Dante, Enzo, Jax.

Classics that never age

Names everyone recognises and nobody finds odd at the vet: Bob, Rex, Buddy, Charlie, Jack, Duke, Oscar, Cooper, Sam, Teddy, Bingo, Rufus, Bruno, Tobias, Murphy, Diesel, Baxter, Winston, Otto, Barney.

Funny, for people who want to laugh every time

One warning: you will shout this name in public for about fifteen years. If it still makes you laugh after that thought, go for it: Meatball, Nugget, Waffle, Potato, Bacon, Pudding, Sausage, Pickle, Mozzarella, Taco, Dumpling, Pretzel, Biscuit, Noodle, Popcorn, Gravy, Brisket, Cookie, Churro, Gnocchi.

Strong, for big dogs (or small ones with opinions)

Zeus, Thor, Apollo, Atlas, Titan, Odin, Loki, Ares, Kratos, Hulk, Brutus, Samson, Magnus, Fenrir, Rambo, Tyson, Blade, Sheriff, Falcon, Tornado. Half of these end up on ten kilo dogs, and the joke lasts a lifetime.

People names, which is the current trend

Common now and it works, because they are names your mouth already knows: Arthur, Benji, Caleb, David, Elias, Felix, George, Hector, Ivan, Jasper, Leo, Martin, Nico, Oliver, Peter, Rafa, Simon, Theo, Vincent, Walter.

Nordic and snowy, great for huskies and malamutes

If your dog looks built for winter, these fit: Balto, Nanook, Yukon, Denali, Aspen, Blizzard, Frost, Kodiak, Sitka, Juneau, Tundra, Alaska, Glacier, Sherpa, Everest, Boreal, Snow, Winter, Nordic, Storm.

The 3-second test that actually decides it

Down to two or three favourites? Do this before you commit, because this is where most names fall apart:

  1. Shout the name three times, out loud, outside. If it embarrasses you, it is out. You will do this every single day.
  2. Say the name next to a command: "Thor, sit". If the two words blur together, change it.
  3. Ask a child to repeat it. If the kid in the house cannot pronounce it, your dog will grow up answering to whatever nickname they invent.
  4. Sleep on it. A name chosen in the excitement of the first night almost always changes by the end of the week.

For more ideas without splitting by sex, there is a longer list at dog names: 80 ideas, and the female version is at female dog names.
