What animal makes this sound? Just say “meow”, “moo” or let out a long howl, and let your child guess who it is. Below you will find 20 ready-made riddles, each with the answer right after it, sorted by age. No materials, no internet and no prep: all you need is your voice and a funny face.

How to play

The rule is simple: the grown-up makes the sound (or describes it, for the trickier ones) and the child says which animal it is. When they get it right, cheer together and swap roles: now the child makes the sound and you pretend to have no clue. Taking turns is the favorite part for many little ones.

If your child guesses wrong, no worries. Repeat the sound more slowly, give a hint about where the animal lives or what it eats, and let them try again. The goal is to laugh together, not to pass a test.

Riddles for ages 2 to 4

For the little ones, use animals they already know from books, cartoons and outings. A clear, repeated sound is the main clue. Look at your child with a mysterious face and only then reveal the answer.

  • “Meow, meow!” Who has whiskers and a little tail and makes this sound? Answer: the cat.
  • “Woof, woof!” Who wags its tail and barks when you come home? Answer: the dog.
  • “Moooo!” Who makes this big sound and gives us milk? Answer: the cow.
  • “Quack, quack!” Who waddles along and loves swimming in the pond? Answer: the duck.
  • “Oink, oink!” Who loves mud and has a round little snout? Answer: the pig.
  • “Cock-a-doodle-doo!” Who wakes up the whole farm early in the morning? Answer: the rooster.
  • “Baaa, baaa!” Who has fluffy wool and is a cousin of the goat? Answer: the sheep.
  • “Neigh!” Who whinnies and trots across the pasture? Answer: the horse.
  • “Ribbit, ribbit!” Who hops by the pond and sings when it rains? Answer: the frog.
  • “Bzzzzz!” Who flies from flower to flower and makes honey? Answer: the bee.

Riddles for ages 5 to 8

Now we bring in animals of the forest, the sea and the night. Some sounds are hard to imitate, so you can describe the noise and add an extra hint. Older kids also love inventing riddles for the grown-up to solve.

  • “Hoo, hoo, hoo-hoo!” Who wakes up at night and can turn its head almost all the way around? Answer: the owl.
  • “Awooooo!” A long howl at the full moon. Who lives in the woods and walks with a pack? Answer: the wolf.
  • “Awooooo!” Also a howl, but this one comes from a blue-eyed Siberian husky who loves to howl at the sky. Who is it? Answer: Pigúiça, the heroine of the book Dogavios.
  • “Rrroarrr!” A roar that echoes across the savanna. Who is the king of the beasts? Answer: the lion.
  • “Prrrruuu!” A mighty trumpet that comes out of a long trunk. Who is it? Answer: the elephant.
  • High whistles and little clicks. Who leaps through the waves and talks to friends like this? Answer: the dolphin.
  • A deep, long song underwater. Who is the giant of the sea that “sings” to the other side of the ocean? Answer: the whale.
  • “Chirp-chirp, chirp-chirp!” Who plays the violin with its wings on summer nights? Answer: the cricket.
  • “Ooh-ooh, aah-aah!” Who swings from branch to branch and loves bananas? Answer: the monkey.
  • “Gobble-gobble-gobble!” Who spreads its tail like a fan on the farm and makes this full-cheeks noise? Answer: the turkey.

Tips for playing better

Taking turns is the key. After two or three riddles, hand over the role: your child makes the sound and you try to guess. Get it wrong on purpose now and then, because watching a grown-up mix up a pig and a duck is peak comedy for little ones.

Make the sound very softly. When you whisper the meow, your child leans in, pays attention and really listens. Then raise the volume little by little and turn the game into a rollercoaster of voices.

Take it in the car. On a trip or in a waiting line, it asks for nothing and passes the time: everyone makes a sound and the others guess, for a pretend point or just a good laugh. To keep the mood going, the free Pigúiça game runs in the browser with no signup and no ads, and the children's songs have plenty of animals to sing along with.

Frequently asked questions

What age can kids start playing?

From about age 2, once they recognize sounds of common animals like the cat, dog and cow. Before that, just show a picture and make the sound, without expecting an answer.

What if my child does not know the animal's name?

Use the game to teach it. Say the name, repeat the sound and show a picture or a video. In the next round, they will probably remember.

Can I invent sounds for different animals?

You can and you should. Every family has its own meow and its own cock-a-doodle-doo. Agree on sounds for new animals and add silly rules, like only whispered answers count.
