If you just brought a husky puppy home, you have probably already heard the breed is «stubborn» and hard to train. There is some truth to that: huskies were bred to think for themselves on long sled journeys, which makes them independent and less eager to please than some other breeds. But that does not mean they are hard to train, it just means the method needs to be different.
Start socialization early
Between 8 and 16 weeks of age, puppies are at their most receptive to meeting the world. Calmly introduce new people, vaccinated dogs, different sounds (vacuum, doorbell, traffic), and varied textures. Puppies well socialized during this window tend to grow into more confident, less reactive adults.
Positive reinforcement is the way
- Reward with treats, enthusiastic praise, or play immediately after the right behavior, timing matters more than the reward itself.
- Never use physical punishment or yelling: huskies tend to become more resistant or avoidant with harsh methods, not more obedient.
- 5 to 10-minute sessions, several times a day, work better than one long session, puppies have short attention spans.
- Always end on a win, even if you have to make the last exercise easier.
Basic commands to start with
Focus first on «sit», «come», and «stay». The «come» command deserves extra attention with this breed: huskies have a strong prey drive and can bolt after a scent or movement, so a solid recall can literally save your dog's life. Always practice in a safe space with a long leash before trusting open areas.
Tire the mind, not just the body
A bored husky is a husky that destroys the couch. Enrichment toys, treat puzzles, and short training sessions help tire out the dog's mind, which often reduces unwanted behavior more than just running around the yard.
Patience is the keyword
Progress can feel slow for a few weeks and then suddenly speed up, that is normal for the breed.
