Can Dad Do It? 12 Fun Family Challenges for Kids
Dogavios: Where Dreams Come to Life

Your next adventure could be a moment together.

Now that you have met Pigúiça here, discover the story behind her world. See the illustrations, read the beginning and choose a book to share with your child, one page at a time.

Can Dad do it? In this game the child is in charge: they become the judge or the party host, and the grown-up takes on birthday and surprise challenges. Here are 12 family challenges, sorted by age from 3 to 8, all short, safe and done indoors.

You only need some open space, a cushion, any small box and plenty of laughter. Read each question in a party-host voice, let the grown-up try, and let your child give the score, from zero to ten hugs. At the end of each challenge everyone cheers, and that finish is what the family will want to repeat.

Before you start: safety first

The party is pretend, so nobody needs to hurry. Do not climb on furniture, chairs, sofas or beds for any challenge. Always turn very slowly and finish sitting down, never standing up and dizzy. Move tables and sharp corners, clear anything that could trip someone, stay close the whole time and stop right away if anyone gets tired, feels queasy or loses interest. Play is never a test.

Challenges for ages 3 and 4

At this age, simple and quick actions work best. The child is the helper who announces each challenge and claps at the end.

  1. Can Dad blow out the pretend candles? Your child draws five little candles in the air with a finger, and Dad takes a deep breath and blows them out one by one, slowly, counting out loud. To finish, the audience shouts: «Happy birthday!»
  2. Can Mom make a surprised face? Your child counts to three and Mom opens her mouth wide, widens her eyes and puts her hands on her cheeks. If the child laughs, she earns ten points. To finish, everyone says together: «Ooooh!»
  3. Can Grandma give a surprise hug? Hiding behind the door, Grandma waits for the child to call her name and then comes out with open arms for a big squeeze. To finish, the child hugs back and says: «Surprise!»
  4. Can little brother hide a present? The child closes their eyes while the brother hides a wrapped cushion somewhere low in the room, without climbing on anything. Then they open their eyes and search. To finish, whoever finds it raises both arms: «Found it!»

Challenges for ages 5 and 6

Now your child understands rules and loves being the party host. They keep time and decide who got it right.

  1. Can Dad guess what is in the box with his eyes closed? The child puts a soft object in a small box, like a sock or a plush toy, and Dad feels it with eyes closed and takes a guess. The child may give a hint. To finish, when he gets it right: «Ta-da!»
  2. Can Mom dance Happy Birthday in slow motion? Standing in the middle of the room, Mom sings and dances the birthday song like a slow-motion movie while the child films with a hand shaped like a camera. To finish, they laugh and say: «Cut!»
  3. Can Grandma keep a birthday secret? The child whispers a pretend secret in Grandma’s ear, and she zips her lips and acts like she will not tell, not even under pretend tickling. No real tickling. To finish, the child unzips: «You can tell!»
  4. Can little brother carry the imaginary cake without dropping it? With both hands open like a tray, he walks slowly in a straight line for five steps, carrying the pretend cake to the table. To finish, the child sings: «Hip, hip!» And everyone answers: «Hooray!»

Challenges for ages 7 and 8

Here come balance, focus and a bit of daring, always with the grown-up seated or close by.

  1. Can Dad get a little dizzy and sit on the sofa without falling? The child holds Dad’s hand while he turns very slowly in place, two turns, and helps him keep his balance. Then the two walk slowly to the sofa and sit down together. To finish, Dad says: “I’m dizzy!” And the child answers: “Take a breath!”
  2. Can Mom wrap a present with her eyes closed? The child hands over a sheet of paper and a small toy, and Mom tries to wrap it without looking while the child counts ten seconds. To finish, the judge opens the package: «Almost!»
  3. Can Grandma be the balloon that fills up and deflates? Standing with arms down, Grandma slowly fills up with an air sound while raising her arms high, then deflates slowly, bending her knees a little. The child is the blower. To finish, the sound: «Pffffff!»
  4. Can little brother be the party host? He announces every challenge in an announcer voice and hands a paper medal to everyone who tried, himself included. To finish, everyone applauds and shouts: «What a party!»

Turn the challenge into coloring time

After so much laughing, children are often ready to sit down and focus. Offer one of our free printable coloring pages and ask them to color a birthday card for the grown-up who had the most fun. Each drawing becomes a party keepsake, and chatting about colors and gifts builds attention and vocabulary.

Pigúiça and Fofuxo, the friends from the Dogavios book, love a surprise too, and you can meet them in the free Pigúiça game, which runs in the browser, with no sign-up and no ads.

Tips to make the challenges work

Use a party-host voice. Asking the question with suspense is half the fun, and the finish is the prize.

Do just a few at a time. Three or four challenges are plenty, and the rest can wait for the next party.

Frequently asked questions

What ages are these challenges for?

They were designed for children ages 3 to 8. The first four are the simplest, and the last ones ask for more balance and focus. Families can mix the groups and adapt to their child’s pace.

Do I need any materials or a big space?

No. A free corner of the living room, a cushion and a small box are enough. None of the challenges use heavy, sharp or fragile objects, nobody climbs on furniture, and a grown-up stays close the whole time.

What if the grown-up or the child cannot do a challenge?

That is fine. Make it easier, try another challenge or repeat it tomorrow. The goal is to play and laugh together, not to pass a test. Praise the attempt and always finish with a hug.
