After weeks of vacation with no fixed schedule, most families hit the same wall when school starts again: kids have lost their bedtime rhythm, their attention span, and their sense of a predictable day. The good news is there is one simple, enjoyable habit that can rebuild that structure in just a few days: a nightly family read-aloud.

Why reading is the perfect anchor habit

Unlike homework or bath time, story time rarely meets resistance, most kids genuinely want to hear a story. That makes it the ideal routine to rebuild a sense of time: if the book always happens at 8 p.m., a child's brain starts linking that moment to «the day is winding down», which also makes falling asleep easier.

Start small: 10 minutes a night

You don't need to rebuild months of routine in one evening. Pick a fixed time, even just 10 to 15 minutes, and hold it steady for seven nights before adjusting anything else (bath, brushing teeth, lights out). Consistency of timing matters more than the length of the reading.

Bilingual books make the restart count double

Back-to-school is also a great window to introduce new vocabulary, in English and, if possible, in a second language. Bilingual stories, like the adventures of Pigúiça, a spirited husky puppy who lives in a Magical Garden, work well because the text is short, repetitive, and richly illustrated, so even pre-readers can follow the plot and start recognizing words in both languages.

A first-week checklist

  • Pick one fixed time and give a heads-up (« ten more minutes, then it's book time »)
  • Leave 2-3 books within reach for your child to choose, a sense of control lowers resistance
  • Turn off screens at least 20 minutes before reading
  • Celebrate small wins: « You sat through the whole story tonight! »

Reading as the bridge from vacation to classroom

Once the reading routine feels stable, everything else about back-to-school gets easier to slot in, bedtime, wake-up time, backpack packed the night before. Think of it not as one more chore, but as the thread that hands your child's days their predictability back, without fights or pressure.
