August 22 is Brazilian Folklore Day, and it's a treasure chest of stories, songs and games that crossed generations precisely because children LOVE them. The secret is picking the right angle for each age.
The characters (without the scares)
For little ones, introduce the characters through mischief, not fear: Saci is the playful one-legged boy who hides toys; Curupira, the forest guardian with backwards feet who confuses those who harm animals; Iara, the maiden who sings beautifully by the river; the Boto, a river dolphin who becomes human to dance at parties. Save the scarier ones for older kids who ask for «scary stories» on their own.
Folklore games ready for today
- Circle songs (cantigas de roda): hands joined, circle spinning: the oldest (and cheapest) form of kids' party in Brazil.
- Tongue twister contest: whoever stumbles starts over, laughing. Excellent for diction, disguised as a joke.
- Saci hunt: hide a little red paper cap around the house and leave clues. Saci «hid» one toy from each child.
- One-leg hop: a Saci circuit in the yard: cross the room hopping on one leg to become Saci's helper.
- Riddles: «what is it, what is it?» is pure folklore. Collect your family's favorites.
Folklore is also music
Circle songs are Brazil's oldest form of music education: simple melody, repetition and movement, exactly what a child's brain loves. Build a «folklore show» afternoon: a circle song, a tongue twister and, to close, the Dogavios songs, which drink from that same fountain of catchy melodies and stories with values. 🪕
