Your child drops the page after two minutes and you conclude they «don't like coloring.» Most of the time the problem isn't the child, it's the sheet. Too much detail frustrates; too little bores. Getting the difficulty right changes everything.
Ages 2 to 3: filling, not precision
At this age children don't control pressure or line well yet. What they can do is move a crayon back and forth inside a large area. Look for: a single very large figure, thick outlines, almost no interior detail. Expect scribbles over the lines, and don't correct them. The gain here is motor, not aesthetic. Chunky crayons work better than thin pencils.
Ages 4 to 5: intention appears
Now they want it to look right. They can respect the line most of the time and choose colors on purpose. Look for: a character in action, two or three elements, a simple background. This is the age where asking «what color will the sky be?» starts a real conversation.
Ages 6 to 7: they want the challenge
Detail stops being an obstacle and becomes the appeal. Look for: a full scene, more than one character, textures to fill. At this stage many children start inventing inside the page, adding a sun that wasn't there, writing their name. Let them.
Age 8 and up: coloring becomes a project
Now they want something that takes time and looks good at the end. It's worth offering better supplies (watercolor pencils, fine-tip markers) and suggesting two sessions. At this age the page competes with a screen, so it has to be worth it.
Building a kit that works
