The first week of the holidays is lovely. The second arrives with "I'm bored" every fifteen minutes. The problem usually isn't a shortage of ideas, it's a shortage of structure. Children on holiday still need some predictability, just a looser version of it. With a simple daily skeleton and a stock of activities, the whole month gets much lighter.

The daily skeleton that works

  • Body in the morning: anything that burns energy before lunch, park, garden, bike, paddling pool.
  • Hands in the afternoon: a project at the table, something that builds or gets messy.
  • Quiet late afternoon: reading, an audiobook, agreed screen time, an unhurried bath.
  • One outing a day: just one trip or visit. More than that and you get an exhausted, irritable child.

Projects that fill a whole week

  • Holiday diary: one drawing and one sentence a day. By the end it's a book they'll reread for years.
  • Permanent den: build a den in a corner and improve it daily.
  • Pot garden: chives, basil, a bean in cotton wool. Watering becomes routine.
  • Weekend theatre: rehearse all week, perform for the family on Saturday.
  • Home museum: collect objects, write labels, charge pretend admission.

Ideas for the loose days

  • Cook something new: let them choose the recipe and read the ingredients aloud.
  • Living-room picnic: for when it's too hot or raining.
  • Opposite day: breakfast for dinner, pyjamas all day.
  • Treasure hunt with a map: drawing the map is half the fun.
  • Water afternoon: balloons, hose, sponges. No structure, just water.
  • Visit someone: a grandparent, a neighbour, a friend. Company counts as an activity.
  • Sort the toys: deciding what to give away sparks good conversations and frees space.
  • Origami marathon: one fold a day using magazine paper.
  • Library afternoon: free air conditioning and new books.
  • Themed film: watch it, then draw the favourite character.
  • Helping day: wash the car, organise the pantry, proper grown-up jobs.

How not to arrive exhausted in September

  • Share with another family: one morning at yours, one at theirs. Two children playing together are less work than one on their own.
  • Keep one unplanned day a week: pyjamas, mess and nothing in the diary. You're on holiday too.

On boredom and screens

Agree the screen rules on day one of the holidays, in writing, stuck to the fridge. Renegotiating daily is far more exhausting than deciding once. And when boredom shows up, remember: a few empty minutes are exactly what push a child to invent something. Don't rush to fill them.

For the very hot or very rainy days, it helps to have one screen option that leaves you something to talk about afterwards, Dogavios has a free browser game and short cartoons with Pigúiça the husky, which tend to land better than an endless video feed.
