The paper airplane is the most democratic toy there is: one sheet, two minutes, and the living room becomes an airport. But there's a huge difference between the plane that flies two meters and nosedives and the one that crosses the whole hallway. The difference is technique, and kids love learning it.

The champion model (the improved «dart»)

  • 1. Letter or A4 sheet, portrait. Fold in half lengthwise and open it again: that's the center line.
  • 2. Fold the two top corners to the center line. You get a triangle on top.
  • 3. Fold the triangle's tip down, to about three fingers from the bottom edge. This concentrates weight in the nose, the secret of a long flight.
  • 4. Fold the top corners to the center line again, over the flap. A little bit of the flap peeks out: fold that bit up, locking the folds (the «lock trick»).
  • 5. Fold in half, folds on the outside.
  • 6. Make the wings: fold each side down, aligning the wing edge with the plane's base. Equal wings, no rushing.

The 3 pilot tweaks

  • Nose weight: a plane that climbs and plunges (the famous «bucking») is light in front. A small piece of tape on the tip fixes it.
  • Rear flaps: fold a centimeter of each wing's back edge upward. If it nosedives, increase the flap; if it climbs too much, reduce it. Same principle as real airplanes.
  • Launch angle: don't throw upward or hard. Launch straight, at shoulder height, with a smooth motion. Too much force makes the plane «wobble» and lose its course.

Championship at home

Mark a starting line with tape on the floor, three attempts per pilot, measure in steps. Categories that work: distance, time in the air (phone stopwatch) and softest landing. Each child names their plane and draws the emblem on the wings.

The hidden science

While tweaking, the child is learning the four concepts every pilot knows: weight, lift, drag and thrust. No need to use the names. Just the right question: «why did it nosedive? what do we change?». Test, observe and adjust is the whole scientific method, in paper.

When the airport closes

After an afternoon of flying, energy drops and the body asks for a seated activity. It's the right moment for free online coloring or an adventure story: Pigúiça the husky also flies high in the free Dogavios game, jumping through the clouds of the Magic Garden. ✈️
