Forget the image of a child sitting cross-legged with closed eyes for ten minutes: it does not exist (and does not need to). Mindfulness for kids is something else: tiny anchors, one or two minutes long, that bring attention back to the body when the head is a hurricane. It works for the tantrum rolling in, for test anxiety and for winding down before sleep.

7 two-minute exercises

  • Candle breath: a raised index finger is the candle. Breathe in deep through the nose, blow out slowly «without putting it out». Three candles and the body has already slowed.
  • Tired dog breath: breathe in through the nose, then let tongue and air flop out like a dog after a run. They laugh, but they relax.
  • Surfing teddy: lying down, teddy on the belly: the mission is making the teddy rise and fall slowly with each breath.
  • Detective listening: one minute in silence counting how many different sounds you can hear. Then compare lists.
  • Heavy hands: press palms together hard for 5 seconds, release suddenly. Feel the tingle. Repeat three times.
  • 5 senses walk: find 5 things to see, 4 to touch, 3 to hear, 2 to smell and 1 to taste. The classic that works at any age.
  • Mindful coloring: pick a drawing and color while noticing only the pencil's little sound and the color filling the space. The exercise that lasts longest on its own.

The secret: practice during calm

Teach the exercises in a good moment, as a game. Then, when the storm arrives, «do the candle» is already a known code, not a brand-new order in the middle of chaos.

Coloring is the mindfulness kids request on their own

Repetitive movement, focus on a single point and a beautiful result at the end: coloring has the exact structure of a mindfulness exercise, and it is the only one children ask to repeat. The Dogavios coloring book makes the session even sweeter: big figures of Pigúiça the husky, one drawing per page and a blank back. Ten minutes of focused silence, guaranteed. 🧘
