For many children, the letter to Santa is the first time writing has a real reason: someone important is going to read it. That's why it deserves to be treated as an event, not a shopping list dictated in a hurry. With the right structure, it becomes an exercise in writing, gratitude and imagination, all at once.
When to write it
November is the ideal month: early enough for the mail and for parents to «negotiate» the list, late enough for the excitement to be in the air. Many postal services run a Santa letter program (USPS Operation Santa in the US, Royal Mail's Santa address in the UK, Canada Post's North Pole address) and children's letters get answered.
The structure that works (at any age)
- Greeting: «Dear Santa».
- Introduction: name, age, where they live. For little ones, that's half the letter already.
- One good thing from the year: «this year I learned to ride a bike». It teaches looking back with pride.
- A thank-you: for last year's present or for something in life. It's the part that transforms the letter most.
- The wish: one or two wishes, with the why. «I'd like a dinosaur book because I want to know all their names.»
- A wish for someone else: a sibling, a grandparent, the dog. One line that teaches empathy without a lecture.
- Sign-off and signature: with the name written by the child themselves, however wobbly.
Template by age
Ages 3 to 5: the child dictates, you write, they draw. The drawing is the main text and the wish fits in one sentence. Ages 6 to 7: they write the words they can, you fill in with a different color pen. Leave the mistakes: they're the most beautiful part. Ages 8+: they write alone, you only review by reading aloud at the end.
6 ideas to make it a tradition
- Special paper: a pretty sheet kept just for this, with a stamp or glitter.
- Hand-decorated envelope, with «North Pole» written big.
- Photo of the letter before sending: the collection of letters over the years is one of the most moving albums there is.
- Reading it aloud at the dinner table, with applause.
- Cookies for the trip: the child «sends» cookies along (which mysteriously disappear).
- Keep the reply: if an answer comes, it goes into the child's treasure box.
When the wish is impossible
A horse, a baby brother, a swimming pool. Don't correct on the spot, just add one sentence: «Santa chooses among the wishes, so let's put down more than one». The child learns that asking is different from receiving without anyone having to say no.
The present that lasts all year
If the list has room for a book, it's the wish that pays off most: one story becomes dozens of nights. The adventure of Pigúiça the husky in the Dogavios book is about believing in your dreams, a theme made for the season, and her coloring book fills the whole holiday break. ✉️
