«I can't draw» kills more children's drawings than a missing pencil ever did. The truth is that every animal fits into two or three simple shapes, and once a child discovers that, they draw the whole zoo on their own. The method below never changes: big light shapes first, details after.
The rule that works for all of them
Start with a circle for the head and an oval for the body, pressing lightly. Those two shapes are the skeleton. Only then come ears, legs, tail and face. A wrong big shape is easy to erase; a wrong shape under finished details is not.
1. Cat
Circle for the head, slightly bigger oval below for the body. Two triangles on top of the head become ears. A curved line off the body is the tail. On the face: two round eyes, an upside-down triangle nose and three little dashes on each side for whiskers.
2. Rabbit
The same cat with two changes: the ears become two long ovals and the tail becomes a puffy circle. That's it. Showing your child that transformation is the exact moment they understand drawing is assembling parts.
3. Fish
A sideways oval, a triangle at the back for the tail and a smaller triangle on top for the fin. A dot for the eye and a little smile. Scales: repeated half-moons, and there's no need to fill the whole body.
4. Bird
Small circle (head) touching a bigger oval (body). An orange triangle is the beak, an oval inside the body is the wing, two dashes are the feet. Done: a bird in profile, the easiest of them all.
5. Turtle
A big half-moon for the shell, a flattened rectangle underneath, a round head poking out one side and four short legs. On the shell, draw hexagons or simply a flower in the middle with pieces around it.
6. Butterfly
A thin oval in the middle (the body), two antennae on top and four wings: two large above and two smaller below, matching on both sides. Here comes the hidden math: your child practices symmetry without noticing.
3 tips that change the result
- Light pencil first: the starting shapes are a sketch, they have to erase easily.
- Draw alongside, on your own paper: never draw on your child's sheet. They copy the process, not the result.
- Praise a part, not the whole: «that tail has great movement» teaches more than «it's beautiful».
From pencil to color
After drawing comes the best part, coloring. If your child wants ready-made figures while their line work gets steadier, you can color online for free or use the Dogavios coloring book, with 50+ big drawings of Pigúiça the husky and a blank back on every page. ✏️
