Store-bought dough dries out in two weeks and isn't cheap. Homemade play dough costs almost nothing, uses what's already in the cupboard, and your child gets the best part: making it. Here are two recipes, one no-cook and one cooked (that one lasts months).

Quick no-cook recipe

Ingredients: 2 cups plain flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1 tablespoon oil, about 3/4 cup warm water and food coloring.

Method: mix flour and salt in a bowl. Add the oil, then pour the water in slowly while stirring. When the mixture stops sticking to your hands, knead for two minutes. Split into balls and drop a color into each. Ready in 5 minutes, keeps about two weeks in a sealed container in the fridge.

Cooked recipe, lasts months

Ingredients: 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tablespoons cream of tartar (or 4 of lemon juice), 2 tablespoons oil, 2 cups water and coloring.

Method: mix everything in a pan over low heat, stirring constantly. In 3 to 5 minutes the mixture thickens and pulls away from the bottom into a ball. Take it off the heat, let it cool a little and knead well. This is the version that comes out silky like the store-bought kind and lasts 3 to 6 months.

Cream of tartar is the secret

It provides the elasticity and preserves the dough. Without it the dough is crumblier and dies sooner, which is exactly why most homemade recipes disappoint. Can't find it? Lemon juice does the same job, with a slightly shorter life.

How to make it even better

  • Scent: a spoon of instant coffee, cinnamon or vanilla makes it aromatic (just avoid food scents with kids who still taste everything).
  • Sparkle: a pinch of fine glitter turns it into «magic» dough.
  • Texture: a handful of fine sand or dry rice makes sensory dough, great for older babies to explore.
  • Storage: airtight container or zip bag, always in the fridge. If it dries, a few drops of water and a fresh knead bring it back.

What to do with it (beyond balls)

  • Stamp it with a fork, a bottle cap and a sieve to see the textures.
  • Roll snakes into letters and numbers, which is writing preparation.
  • Build the characters from a favorite book, then retell the story with them.
  • Cut it with cookie cutters, the most fun hand-strength exercise there is.

Why play dough is worth so much

Squeezing, rolling and pressing strengthen exactly the hand muscles that will hold a pencil soon. It's writing preparation disguised as play, just like coloring. In fact the two pair well: after modeling, many kids want to draw what they made, and then it's time to color online for free or open the Dogavios coloring book. 🎨
