The tall chair, the bright light, the sound of instruments, to a young child, the dental office can feel pretty terrifying. The good news is that, with the right preparation, this experience can become calm, even positive, starting from the very first visit.
Start early, before the fear has a chance to set in
The recommendation is to bring your child to the dentist around their first birthday, or as soon as the first tooth appears, even if the visit is just to «meet the chair.» That way, their first experience doesn't happen during a moment of pain or urgency.
Use honest language, no scaring, no hiding
Avoid phrases like «it won't hurt at all» (if something does hurt a bit, your child loses trust in you) or «the dentist will give you a shot if you don't brush your teeth» (turns the professional into a threat). Try instead: «The dentist is going to look at your teeth with a little light and a little mirror, to see how strong and healthy they are.»
A no-procedure first visit
- Ask for a «get-to-know-you» visit. Many pediatric dentists offer a first appointment just for the child to sit in the chair, see the instruments from a distance, and meet the staff, no procedures involved.
- Play dentist at home first. Let your child «examine» a stuffed animal's teeth with a toothbrush, counting the little teeth out loud.
- Let them bring a comfort object (stuffed animal, blanket) to the appointment.
- Praise the courage, not just the outcome. «You were nervous and still sat in the chair, that was so brave» matters more than «you behaved well.»
Stories prepare better than long explanations
