There's a time of year when the ground turns into a free craft store: leaves of every color, pine cones, twigs, chestnuts and seeds. In the Northern Hemisphere it runs from September to November; in the south, autumn falls between March and June, but any street with trees yields leaves all year round. The fun starts before the crafting: with the collecting.
First, the collecting (already an activity)
A paper bag, one rule («only what has already fallen, no pulling») and a mission: «find 5 different colors» or «find the biggest and the smallest». At home, rinse the leaves quickly, pat dry and pick the most intact ones.
How to dry leaves so they last
- Pressed: between two sheets of paper inside a heavy book for a week. They come out smooth and flat, perfect for collage.
- Waxed: an adult melts an old candle, dips the leaf by the stem and lets it drip. It turns glossy and lasts months.
- Glycerin: 1 part glycerin to 2 parts water, leaves soaked for 3 days. They stay flexible and don't crumble.
10 crafts by age
- Leaf animal (3+): one big leaf is the body, small leaves are ears and legs, eyes drawn with a pen. Owl, fox and fish are the easiest.
- Leaf print (3+): paint the veined side with poster paint and press it on paper. Every leaf prints a different pattern.
- Leaf crown (4+): a strip of card sized to the head and leaves glued in a row. King and queen of autumn.
- Leaf rubbing (4+): leaf under the paper, a crayon laid flat and rubbed over: the veins appear like magic.
- Twig mobile (5+): two twigs tied in a cross with string, leaves and pine cones hanging from threads of different lengths.
- Pine cone hedgehog (5+): pine cone on its side, play-dough snout, bead eyes. Done in two minutes.
- Door wreath (6+): a cardboard ring (a paper plate with the center cut out works) covered in overlapping leaves.
- Nature mandala (6+): on the floor or a tray, leaves, seeds and pebbles arranged in concentric circles. Taking a photo and dismantling it is part of it.
- Bookmark (7+): a pressed leaf glued on a narrow strip of card, covered with wide tape or clear adhesive film. It becomes a gift.
- Leaf picture (7+): pressed leaves composed and glued on dark paper, in a simple frame. Real art for the wall.
What children learn without noticing
Sorting by color, size and shape is math. Observing veins is science. Composing a mandala is symmetry. All with material that costs nothing and that they picked from the ground themselves.
After the mess
