The temptation in the shop is real: the 48-color set with a built-in sharpener gleams on the shelf. But a three-year-old will use four colors and snap every point within a week. Good supplies are the right supplies for the hand that will hold them.

Ages 2 to 3: thick and washable

Very chunky crayons, the kind a child grips with a closed fist. The three-finger pincer grip isn't there yet, so thin pencils slip and frustrate. Go washable, because it will end up off the page at some point. Six colors is plenty.

Ages 4 to 5: pencil time

The pincer grip works now and colored pencils fit well. Buy few and good: twelve decent-quality colors lay down better than thirty-six cheap ones, which come out chalky and make children press until the point breaks. A desk sharpener prevents half the meltdowns.

Ages 6 to 8: markers and blending

Now they want strong color and a crisp result. Medium-tip markers do the job, and this is where thicker paper matters, because markers bleed through thin copy paper. It's also a good moment for watercolor pencils: color dry, then brush water over it, near magic at this age.

What's usually a waste

  • Giant sets. Children use the same six colors. The other 42 dry out.
  • Markers with a stamp in the cap. The cap breaks, the marker dries.
  • Tiny pots of poster paint. They dry before they're used up. Buy bigger pots and refill.
  • Toy sharpeners. They break the point instead of sharpening it, and the child gets blamed.

Where you store it matters

An open, low box within your child's reach beats a beautiful case in a cupboard. If they have to ask, the urge passes before you get there.

Paper is half the result

Good supplies on bad paper disappoint. Start with a thick-lined, well-printed page, you can download 239 for free, and you'll notice the same pencil box suddenly looks better.
