«Early music education» sounds like music school, but the truth is simpler (and cheaper): it means introducing the world of sound to your child through play. And the ideal teacher for the first years is you, even if you can't play a note.
Ages 0 to 2: the body is the instrument
- Sing while holding them: the vibration of your chest as you sing is the first music lesson of a baby's life.
- Sway on the beat: dance slowly with the baby in your arms, marking time with your body.
- House sounds: «did you hear the bird?», «that's the rain». Naming sounds trains listening.
Ages 2 to 4: clap, stomp and echo
- Echo game: you clap a rhythm, the child repeats it. Start with 2 beats and grow.
- Fast and slow: sing the same song at silly speeds: turtle-slow, rocket-fast.
- Loud and tiny: sing shouting (outside!) and whispering. That's a first taste of musical dynamics.
Ages 4 to 6: time to create
- Change the lyrics: take a known melody and invent lyrics about your day. Laughing is part of the method.
- Build instruments: shaker, tin drum, rubber-band guitar.
- Hunt for instruments by ear: listen to a song and chase the sounds: «is there a drum in there? a guitar?».
The rule for every age
Music time is an invitation, never a demand. If the child just wants to jump, let them jump: jumping on the beat IS music education. Keep a fixed repertoire of quality songs (the Dogavios album has 22, from upbeat to lullabies, free on streaming) and let music live inside the routine: in the car, at bath time, before bed. The brain does the rest. 🎹
